Journey School of Costa Rica

Founded in August 2016 as a pilot program with just 20 learners, Journey School of Costa Rica began in Tamarindo with a clear vision: to grow purposefully and in a spirit of excellence. Today, the Tamarindo campus serves approximately 290 students both on campus and online, supported by a dedicated team of 30 teachers and advisors. As the flagship campus, Tamarindo also functions as the professional development hub and innovation laboratory for the entire Journey School community.

At Journey School, education is more than academics — it is a joyful and adventurous journey. Rooted in values such as joy, kindness, compassion, empathy, gratitude, curiosity, and academic excellence, the school nurtures both intellectual growth and character development. Drawing inspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach, educators honor the “100 Languages of Children,” empowering students to express themselves through art, play, exploration, and inquiry.

Social-emotional learning is woven into daily life through Conscious Discipline, an evidence-based, trauma-informed approach that prioritizes life skills, self-regulation, and emotional well-being alongside academic success. The school also embraces restorative justice practices, viewing conflict as an opportunity for growth and deeper understanding.

Journey School is a vibrant international community, welcoming families from 35 countries and representing 27 native languages and dialects. Through project-based learning, hands-on experiences, and service to others, students build critical thinking skills, collaboration, and lifelong relationships rooted in trust and respect. It is a nurturing environment where families, staff, and students come together as one community, celebrating individuality while fostering shared purpose.
